One of the more interesting ChatGPT use cases I’ve discovered is generating stories to read to my daughter. This has several advantages over traditional short story books. First, she is 5 years old and is interested in something different seemingly every moment of the day. ChatGPT allows me to immediately create something she is interested in at that particular moment. Secondly, I can also prompt ChatGPT to generate content with any lesson I pick, this allows me to use the story to demonstrate to her a point in an earlier conversation or to demonstrate a solution to a problem she faced that day.
Example Story
As a parent, this has been a helpful tool. want to hear a story about mermaids and having trouble finding a friend during recess? No problem:
theobjectivedad:
Generate a short story for a 5 year old girl about mermaids in the ocean going on adventure to find a lost treasure. Show how even though it is hard to make friends when you are shy, the friends you do make respect you for working hard and being kind.
ChatGPT:
Once upon a time, in the deep blue ocean, lived a group of mermaids who loved going on adventures. The leader of the mermaids was named Coral, and she had a special talent for finding lost treasures.
One day, Coral gathered her friends and told them about a treasure that was lost many years ago. It was said to be the most precious treasure in the whole ocean, and nobody had been able to find it.
Coral and her friends were determined to find the treasure, but they knew it wouldn’t be easy. They would have to swim to the deepest parts of the ocean and face many challenges along the way.
One of Coral’s friends was named Shelly. She was a shy mermaid who found it hard to make friends. But Coral and the other mermaids knew that Shelly had a kind heart and was willing to work hard to help find the treasure.
At first, Shelly felt nervous about going on an adventure with so many mermaids. But as they swam deeper into the ocean, she began to realize how much she loved being a part of the group. She saw how everyone was kind and helpful, and she knew that she had found friends for life.
Together, they searched every nook and cranny of the ocean floor. They swam through schools of fish, dodged dangerous sea creatures, and even had to solve riddles to find clues to the treasure’s whereabouts.
Finally, after many days of searching, they found the treasure! It was a beautiful chest filled with shimmering pearls and sparkling jewels. Coral and her friends cheered and hugged each other, and Shelly felt so proud to be a part of the adventure.
As they swam back home, Shelly realized that even though it was hard for her to make friends, the ones she did make respected her for working hard and being kind. She felt grateful for Coral and the other mermaids and knew that they would always be there for her, no matter what.
From that day on, Shelly was no longer shy. She had found her place among the mermaids and knew that anything was possible when you have friends by your side.
Final Thoughts
I have been generating stories this way for almost a month now and the majority have been engaging and quite positive. Initially, I considered posting all of them but held back since it defeats the overall intent of this article. If you have kids I strongly recommend generating your own short stories that demonstrate lessons and values important to you.
